Fairfield County, Connecticut · Fairfield County, CT — no county government
Fairfield County — the money trail
Fairfield County has about 957,000 residents — the most populous county in Connecticut — but it has no county government at all. Connecticut abolished all eight of its county governments in 1960; the counties survive only as lines on a map for the courts. Everything a county elsewhere would do — schools, roads, police, social services — is run by the 23 towns and the state, and since 2022 the Census Bureau uses Connecticut’s regional Councils of Governments as the official county-equivalents. So there is no county budget to walk here: the money lives in the town budgets and the state budget. This page exists to say that plainly. Click any number to see exactly where it comes from. Where the trail goes dark, it becomes a numbered issue in the
docket. New here?
